What are the Millennium Development Goals?

The Millennium Declaration was agreed by world leaders in 2000 in New York, and was signed by 189 UN member states. The Millennium Development Goals were the concrete targets identified in order to advance progress on the Millennium Declaration. There are eight goals with 21 targets.

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

More information on specific targets and indicators can be found here

In 2015 a new framework for global development priorities will be introduced.

Young people will be the ones seeing the impact of this new framework and the ones who will be held accountable for its implementation. Young people need to be a part of this conversation!

There are three great ways to get involved:

  1. Contribute your views on our online survey here.
  2. Review, share and comment on the outcomes of youth consultation workshops from around the world.
  3. Download the youth consultations Toolkit, and run your own youth consultation on a post 2015 framework
